Magical Composting: A Practical, 4-Week Shadow Work Cycle

A stripped-down, brutal, and repeatable framework for confronting your psychological shadow using chaos magic, sigils, and tarot—no pop-psych fluff allowed.

Most pop-psych "shadow work" is fluff. Real shadow work should be treated like magical composting: feeding the garden with what you used to fear. Here is the practical, 4-week cycle I use to confront and integrate disowned psychological traits using chaos magic and tarot.

The 4-Week Cycle

Week 1: Identify (Divination + Witnessing)

Pull a tarot card asking: What shadow is surfacing this cycle? Write a single paragraph on how it shows up in your life. Sit the card on your desk for a week and let it glare at you.

Week 2: Externalize (Object + Sigil Craft)

Write a raw statement of the trait (e.g., "I sabotage when I'm close to success"). Turn it into an Austin Osman Spare-style sigil. Place it under a dark stone. You have now given the shadow a body.

Week 3: Transform (Ritual + Chaos Reframe)

Redraw the sigil, but flip the intent: "I move through failure into mastery." Charge the new sigil. Destroy the old one by burning it. You are symbolically digesting base matter into gold.

Week 4: Integration (Alchemy + Daily Anchor)

Do a mirror-gazing candle rite. Keep the new sigil in your wallet. It is no longer a separate demon; you now carry it as fuel.

The Barebones Rite

No month to spare? Sit with a black candle and a mirror. Write the disowned trait on paper. Say aloud: "This is part of me." Burn it, or contain it in a jar like a servitor. Close with:

"You are part of me. You do not rule me."

Short, brutal, and repeatable.
